Obesity affects around 34% of adults aged 20 or over in the United States, which is around 72 million people. Around 33.3 percent of men and 35.3 perecent of women are obese in America.The amount of people who are obese or overweight in America has increased since 1960 continuously. Around 66 percent of adults in the U.S. were said to be overweight or obese by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of 2003-2004
Depending on which state you live in, the rate of obesity will differ. This can be attributed to the various lifestyles people live along with economic factors and age. The rankings shown below are based on 2004 to 2006 data.
If you yourself are obese then you could have actually inherited it as there is a strong genetic component.
The environment around you is another contributor. Our entire culture helps to foster obesity: lack of physical activity is a problem, and the foods that are the cheapest also contain the most calories and least nutrients. Obesity can have dangerous consequences. Obesity will increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, strokes, type 2 diabetes, gallbladder diseases, age-related macular degenartion, cataracts and breats, prostate and colon cancers. Obviously will all these problems attached it is understandable that obesity is a serious matter. Around 3 percent which is about 7 million adults in America were morbidly obese as of 2005. This was measured by having a BMI (body mass index) of over 40. (according to think tank Rand Corporation). A weight loss of only 10 percent can be enough to improve your health dramatically.
The causes of being Obese
If you are aware of what can cause people to become obese then you’ll have a better understanding of your own struggle.
If you decide on weight loss surgery or not, it is important to understand your condition as it will help you in losing weight and more importantly keeping the weight off. Heres some common causes for obesity:
- Genetics: Obesity can often be traced to genes, and the brain can induce appetite tendencies.
- Illness: Hypothyroidism, Cushing Syndrome and depression.
- Psychology: Mental illness and emotional problems.
- Lifestyle habits: Poor diet and low levels of daily activity.
You may be able to lose weight and improve your health by addressing the causes of your obesity.
If you are fighting a losing battle with your obesity then you may not be able to remove the weight naturally and weight loss surgery may be your only option.
